It seems like we always need a word to describe a movement or a genre or something brewing that only a select few seem to appreciate. In the wake of choreographed headbanging, chugs, growls and falsettos for fourteen year old angsty suburbanites, we have “the wave.” What is “the wave” you ask? It’s the “new movement” of bands like Suis La Lune, Touche Amore, Native and underground acts across the United States harboring a late ’90s love for bands like Funeral Diner, Orchid and Kill Sadie. They’re not necessarily reinventing the wheel, but they’re reminding us why we fell in love with screamo to begin with.

Enter Maryland’s Voyage in Coma. The title says it all as the band belts out 49 minutes of heartfelt screamo - and not that neon clad shit either. The opening “Waiting in the Wings” takes it back to the basements and floors, sweat and grit of house shows across the country. Get on it. Voyage in Coma does it with quick stabs to the heart, elegance, nostalgia, and most of all, honesty.

Boy Problems plays an extremely original brand of emo. The guitar’s are totally clean, and comparable to American Football really, while the vocals are screamed. It sounds amazing. My favorite song on the demo is the first, “I Swallowed a Bug” which features a hilarious Superbad sound clip as well as some of the most rad hooks I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately, they broke up in 2008. Bummer.

Boy Problems features former members of other bands you should have known — Harrison Bergeron, Make Me, and the much loved Street Smart Cyclist .

Boyfriends are 4 piece post punk band from Lancaster Pa, featuring members of 1994!

The result is similar to 1994!, but less mathy and more anthemic, and definitely a lot of fun. I highly recommend checking these dudes out.

I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it. But honestly, I just thought that all the bands I played in were punk rock bands. The reason I think it’s so stupid is that - what, like the Bad Brains weren’t emotional? What - they were robots or something? It just doesn’t make any sense to me.”
